There is not much to say about the tragedy of this natural event that hasn't been communicated by the overwhelming number of emotional images flooding our televisions and newspapers. The human damage and havok that has occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina leaves me feeling very sad... and a feeling of uneasiness due to the lack in responsiveness to the needs of these poor souls.
It almost feels like the television news magazines and our President are treating this is as some sort of disturbing reality televison... "don't worry, if you wait long enough the Dukes of Hazard will be on." Mayve I've seen too many movies or read too many comics, but I get the feeling that our government has forsaken New Orleans and is willing to allow it to decay into a No-Man's Land, perhaps building a wall around it a' la Escape from New York.
The tragedies keep piling up for our national community and there appears to be no leadership in government to ralley our national resolve... and please don't tell me about pre-set press conferences and Social Security parades...
The feelings move this way for me around this hurricane tragedy: fear, sadness, depression, anger... then worry that if others are feeling this way it won't be long until our governemnt isolates itself and pretends nothing has happened to avoid dealing with people... oh, wait, that's already been going on for the last month in Crawford, Texas.
